HDI vs Standard PCB: What Designers Should Know
A comparison of HDI and standard PCB construction, covering via types, line width, layer count and typical applications.

HDI, or high-density interconnect, is often treated as simply a denser board. In practice the choice between HDI and a standard multilayer stackup changes how you route, how much the board costs and which manufacturers can build it. Here is the practical comparison.
What Defines an HDI Board
HDI construction uses microvias plus blind and buried vias to connect layers without consuming routing space on every layer. It is paired with fine-line processing, commonly down to 3mil line width and spacing and holes as small as 0.15mm, along with laser direct imaging exposure and impedance control. Together these let a design achieve higher routing density in a smaller footprint.
What Standard Multilayer Covers
Standard multilayer boards use through-hole vias and conventional line widths. They are the right choice for the majority of industrial, communication and consumer products, where component density does not require microvias. They are easier to manufacture, easier to inspect and lower cost, and their lead times are more predictable.
Choose HDI when the design cannot be routed otherwise, not because it sounds more advanced.
Where the Two Diverge
Three factors drive the decision. Routing density: HDI makes sense when fine-pitch components and high signal counts leave no room on a standard stackup. Size and weight: HDI reduces layer count and board area for compact devices. Cost and yield: HDI adds laser drilling, sequential lamination and tighter process control, so it costs more and narrows the supplier list. A standard stackup with more layers is sometimes the cheaper and more reliable answer.
Applications That Typically Use HDI
HDI boards are common in medical devices, automotive electronics, advanced consumer electronics and communication equipment, where small size and high reliability matter together. Standard multilayer boards remain the norm in industrial control, power supply and general communication equipment.
Making the Decision
If your design routes cleanly on a standard multilayer stackup at acceptable cost, stay there. If fine-pitch components or a hard size limit force microvias, confirm the manufacturer has genuine HDI capability, with blind and buried via support, 3mil line width capability and impedance control.
