How to Choose a PCB Manufacturer: A Buyer's Checklist
A practical checklist for sourcing PCB fabrication and PCBA assembly, covering capability, quality control, lead time and engineering support.

Sourcing a PCB manufacturer is a decision about capability and control, not just price. The boards you buy determine whether your assembly runs smoothly and whether field failures come back to you. This checklist covers the questions that separate a capable partner from a quote that cannot be delivered.
1. Match Layer Count and Construction to Your Design
Start with what your design actually needs. A capable manufacturer should handle everything from single-sided and double-sided boards up to 1-40 layer multilayer, HDI with blind and buried vias, rigid-flex, high frequency and metal core boards. If your design uses thick copper or aluminum substrate, confirm the supplier runs that process in-house rather than outsourcing it.
If the factory cannot state its minimum line width and hole size in numbers, it cannot quote your board accurately.
2. Ask for Written Capability Numbers
Vague promises are not capability. Ask for concrete process limits: number of layers, maximum panel size, minimum line width and spacing, minimum hole diameter, board thickness range and impedance tolerance. For standard multilayer work these are commonly 1-18 layers, panel sizes up to 635 x 1120mm, 0.1mm line width and spacing, and 0.20mm minimum hole diameter with a 10:1 aspect ratio. A supplier who can put these in writing can be held to them.
3. Confirm the Quality System and Inspection Steps
Ask which standards the factory works to and, more importantly, which checks run on every order. A complete flow runs incoming quality control, LDI exposure with impedance control, AOI optical inspection, X-Ray inspection for BGA packages, and functional plus final inspection. Certifications such as ISO9001, ISO13485, RoHS, UL and IPC indicate the system, but the inspection sequence tells you what actually happens to your board.
4. Check Lead Time Realism
Quick-turn is a claim until it is tied to a number. Typical double-sided sample lead times run around 5 days with bulk production at 7-10 days, while multilayer samples run about 7 days and bulk 12-15 days. Compare your deadline against those numbers and ask what changes them, such as impedance control or a special surface finish.
5. Look for Engineering Support
Free DFM analysis before production catches problems while they are still cheap to fix. Ask whether the manufacturer reviews your Gerber files for manufacturability, offers design optimization, and provides technical consultation through the build. A supplier who only takes orders without engineering input shifts every avoidable risk back onto you.
